Spring into Fitness

With the change of season and warmer temperatures, you can’t help but feel an extra spring in your step.

Spring—the season of renewal—is one of the best seasons to push yourself in exercise and healthy eating in preparation for summer vacations. I find myself running with extra energy and less layers as I enjoy the spring season. I also enjoy the change of wardrobe, less layers makes me feel more motivated to work hard in my exercise sessions. Spring is also a great time to see the change of colors as flowers begin to bloom.

These changes may have you finding it almost impossible not to smile. There are many ways you can utilize the change of season to ignite your motivation and push yourself to achieve your fitness and health goals!

Utilize the Time Change

With an extra hour of daylight due to the time change, get out for an evening walk or run.

One of my favorite childhood memories is going for a post-dinner walk with my family. We would burn some calories as we digest our meal and talk about life. Take a page from my book and go for a nice walk after dinner or better yet kick it up a notch with a run! You will feel loads better while aiding the digestive process!

Get Outdoors and Grill

Most people choose not to grill in the winter—depending upon where they live— because of the colder temperatures,

I personally love eating grilled meals because they taste better and are healthier (think of all the fats/oils dripping off below).

You may opt for a skewered meal with veggies and chicken on a skewer. Cook some brown rice or quinoa for your side and don’t forget to add your leafy greens with a nutrient-dense salad. If the weather feels good enough, enjoy your meal outdoors as well!

Multitask with Your Little Ones

The weather is getting warmer which should spark your excitement to get outside. If you are a mom with a little one at home, get out the stroller for a walk for some great stroller exercises. I recently pulled mine out and took my 18-month-old daughter for a run. This was not only a tougher workout because I had to push her up hills, but she loved the fresh air and the ride just sitting there.

Use the stroller to help you get fit while enjoying some fresh air with your little one!

Set Spring Fitness Goals

With spring in full swing, it’s time to reassess your winter fitness goals and make new ones. Maybe you want to run longer, get outside with your road bike or hike on it gets warmer. Whatever fitness and health goal you choose, be sure to push yourself to go further than before. Your daily goals set the path for your future successes! So, push yourself to the next level this spring!

Wear Less Layers

How nice it is to go for a workout without having to bundle up. Wearing one layer instead of three is much more motivating, not to mention there’s less to tote! You will be lighter and still break a sweat.

I find as the weather changes I feel free because I am not boggled down with layers of clothing! It doesn’t hurt that spring fitness clothing is much lighter (and brighter) with those pretty pastel colors!

Do Spring Healthy Cleaning

Open the windows and clean out the window sills, pull out the couches and get in every hidden arena to do spring cleaning. While you are at it, spring clean your refrigerator and pantry. Get rid of any processed food and stock the refrigerator with fruits and veggies. Your waistline will thank you in volumes as you slim down and feel more energetic!

Sign Up for a Race

Spring is the time when races pop up for running and biking. In my home state of New Jersey, there are dozens of races each weekend come springtime and I am sure there are many in your area too. A lot of these races are great because you can support a charity while taking a step closer to your fitness goals. You may even make some new friends on race day!

Go ahead and register for a local race, this may be just the motivation you need to begin training and get your body moving in the right direction!

Swap Your Dining Out Lunch for a Walk

Looking forward to your lunch out with co-workers on the daily? Think again! The weather is conducive for a daily walk—so pack your gym shoes and get out to enjoy the great outdoors.

Make plans with other co-workers to do this on a regular basis. You can slim down, shape up and break up the monotony of the day. You will also find you can think clearer and be more productive after an afternoon workout session. When I was in the workforce, I would head out in the afternoon for a short jog and have my salad in just 30 minutes. I always felt rejuvenated with more energy to spread through the day after this short fitness session! Make time for an afternoon workout so you can experience this surge of energy too.

Make sure to spring into your fitness goals starting today. Make the most out of the weather changes and get in your best shape!
