The Keys to Finding Your Happiness

As the children resume their school schedules, I now have only one child home with me during the day—life has dramatically changed. I have much more free time that I did during the summer.

I’m not rushing around on day trips with four kids. I can focus on my two-year-old, Alexa, to give her some personal attention. I don’t have to divide myself in quarters, she gets me whole! When Alexa naps, I can embrace some “me” time. On some days, this nap can be a few hours of downtime.

With the hustle and bustle of life, it is tough to find time to focus on yourself. Or if you are like me, you feel guilty when you do. But it is time to leave the guilt on the sidelines and make the most of each miraculous day.

Here are some wonderful ways to embrace “me” time and make the most of every moment you can focus on yourself:

Go for a Run

Okay maybe I’m partial to running because I’m a trainer and I simply love to run. I find this to be such an incredible way to release stress while getting a great workout. I also find this to be my favorite kind of “me” time. This is a time to focus on bettering your health and reflecting on life.  Somehow you begin to smile more with each mile! For added pleasure, download your favorite playlist so you can have music carry you through each mile!

Go Shopping

If you have children and find yourself always buying clothing for them, it can be difficult to focus on yourself. And yes, I can relate! Over time as a parent, we become so selfless we forget what it is like to focus on ourselves. I cannot walk into a store without picking up something for at least one of my four children. Usually by the time I reach the checkout counter, I put back all the clothing for myself.

It is important to embrace “me” time and not neglect yourself. So, once a month, go on a small shopping spree and pick up a few necessities and some not-so-necessities!

This shopping spree does not have to break the bank, it can be at a discounted store like Marshalls, TJ Maxx or whatever similar store you have near you. My mission was accomplished the other day with a score of three dresses for under $60! This is another great way to shift gears and focus on yourself for a change.

Meet Up with a Friend for Lunch

If you can take a break from work, meet up with a friend for lunch at a nearby restaurant. “Me” time is anytime you are doing something you enjoy and focusing on this. So, focus on catching up with a friend and make the most out of each moment! Order your favorite entrée, maybe something you do not usually make at home, and bon appetite’!

Go for a Massage

There is nothing more relaxing then a massage. Closing your eyes, letting go and possibly even falling asleep. Let your muscles and mind go while retreating into the massage. There are numerous physical and mental benefits of massage that you should relish in every now and then.

This is something we often neglect because it is a luxury. But this luxury will have you feeling so much better and lighter in stress. It is worth it because you are worth it!

Go for a Makeover

Schedule an appointment for a makeover and then meet up with a friend after to show off the beautiful results. Or better yet, meet up with a friend to go for a makeover together. Bond while getting beautified! Pick up a few new staples for your makeup palette that you will wear regularly and then go out somewhere special. Celebrate you today! If you do not take care of yourself, you cannot take care of anyone else!

Watch a Movie

Enjoy a little rest and relaxation by watching a movie. This is a great vacation from reality, which is much needed occasionally.

I always find comfort in any Hallmark movie because there is always a happy ending. Far different from reality, which is a welcomed breathe of fresh air. Whether you choose to watch a movie at home or at a theatre—enjoy! Make the most of any downtime you have.

Take a Nap

“Me” time is best spent doing something you do not always do, this makes it more of a treat. For myself, a nap is a wonderful way to reset the mind and relax. Sometimes we need to recharge our batteries and a nap is a definite way to do this. Just 15 to 30 minutes can have you feeling an extra spring in your step, so go ahead and catch some Zzzzzs.

These are just a few of the ways you can embrace “me” time if you often put yourself last. Whether you have a hectic family life or work overtime, you deserve to set aside some time for the things that make you happy! How do you treat yourself to add more happiness in your life?
