Shine On Solo


Having a gym companion to meet you for your sweat sessions is great because it can help you to show up on time and stay accountable. It can also help you stay motivated during your workout.


Having company always makes time go by quickly. But what happens when your gym partner is not reliable? Oversleeping, sickness, family sickness and countless excuses to cancel have you feeling frustrated with your gym buddy.


When someone repeatedly cancels it just may be time to change your game plan to one that is solo. Sometimes the only one you can rely on is yourself. I have figured this out over the years and this is one of the many reasons I usually workout alone. Step to it and get on a plan that works for you! Here is how you can motivate yourself in your solo workouts!


The Early Bird Gets the Six Pack


As hard as it is pulling myself from my cozy warm bed, once I work out I am always glad that I did. Early morning workouts are usually the most focused fitness sessions and often the most intense. One of the many reasons is that there are fewer things to get in the way of your morning workout. Your mind is also usually the clearest in the wee hours of the morning. This sets the stage for a healthier and happier day. Some of my best workouts are before 5 a.m. and as a result, I am on fire with energy the rest of the day!


You’re Only as Good as Your Last Workout


On the days when I am just not into my workout, I think about the results I will achieve if I push myself. This often happens in a run when my gears shift slowly at first. But I always remind myself that I am only as fit as my last workout. I lift my legs, take a deep breath and push myself to achieve great results. Go ahead and give it all you’ve got!


No Regrets


The only regret you will have is the workout you did not do. This is one of the truest statements that I can personally attest to. If I have ever missed a workout I have felt guilty and completely bummed.


I have learned from my experience of this. So, on days of contemplation, stop thinking and just do it. Make life happen instead of sitting around and watching life happen to you. I can promise you will not regret it!


Every Day is Another Chance


Go to sleep and wake up every day with a renewed sense of making your dreams into reality because every day is another chance. If you write down your goals and set a plan and put into place, anything can be achieved. Take this chance and make it happen! I used to lay in bed thinking about my goals when I was younger, I now go out daily and make them into my reality. Use each day for the gift that it is!


Put a Goal on the Calendar


Maybe you have a dress you have been dying to wear, your high school reunion is quickly approaching or you just want to better your health. Whatever the reason, put something on your schedule and set small, achievable weekly goals to help you stay on track. To be successful in solo workouts, it is integral to set goals on a continual basis. Go ahead and smash your goals regularly!


Find What Moves You


Whether it is music, an audio book or even a television show, find what gets you moving during your fitness sessions.


Exercise sessions should be dedicated sessions for you to focus on bettering your health and fitness. This should be a time where you hone in on yourself and get moving. I find music gets me moving quicker in my outdoor runs. While on the treadmill, I enjoy watching a movie. In most cases, I get so into the music or the movie, I find myself lost in my workout. I sometimes even forget I am working out.


Just make sure you focus on still pushing yourself to intensity as well. The rule of thumb is to always finish your workout covered in a sweat. This is a good sign that you pushed yourself! Sometimes I finish my runs dripping in sweat and with a smile because I know I pushed myself hard!


Forget the gym partner search and enjoy a solo work out regularly. You can destress, get fit and push yourself to get in your very best shape. This is the one time in your day it is okay to be selfish. You will become mentally stronger in the process.
